Election results, Italy heading towards instability

Italian electoral results leave little space for viable and stable solutions to the impasse. Even if a grand coalition were to be put together, the centre-right and the centre-left simply lack what it takes to responsibly implement the reforms that Italy needs to restructure a rotten system and avoid turmoil on international markets. The vote for anti-establishment 5 Star Movement is somewhat hopeful about the possibility for long-term change: it is possible to renew leadership and do politics with different means from the usual clientelistic ways of gaining consensus. In the short-term, however, it is going to be a long and painful transition before we will see some light. And the negative viral effects on Europe and the global political economic scenario could escalate more quickly than we expect.
